Sports

Barcelona is foremost, a city that brings sport nearer to everyone, pulsating with the action of sports itself. Barcelona has always been a city that lives and breathes sports. Today, and thanks in large part to the holding of the Olympic Games, a quarter of the city's population now regularly does some type of sports and have included physical exercise in their habitual activities.

Among the diverse sports that you can practice in Barcelona are:

- Tennis: The world famous Conde de Godó International Trophi tournament takes place every April.
- Formula 1 Racing: The Formula 1 Grand Prix takes place in May, at Montmeló .
- Sailing and Water sports: Sailing and water sports can be enjoyed to the full in Barcelona due to its close proximity to the sea. Several regattas are held every year during the spring and summer.

- Skiing: There are several ski resorts in the Pyrenees (Girona, Lleida), within easy access from Barcelona through the Cadí Tunnel .

Sports

The City Council promotes and encourages sports at all levels - from amateur to professional, from school to retirement, from 'fun runs' to summer activities - building and remodeling facilities, equipping districts and educational centers. The people of Barcelona have seized the city's public spaces, squares, parks and new beaches and turned them into focal points of sports activities. And we must continue to advance in this direction, facilitating access for everyone to have a healthier lifestyle through physical exercise at the same time consolidating Barcelona 's international role as a city of sports. Among the city s many venues which give tribute to the name of sports are the following:

The Estadi Olímpic located at Passeig Olímpic 17-19, Barcelona , Vizcaya, Spain, with Phone: 93 / 426 20 89, is the pride of Barcelona, an embodiment of their long fulfilled dream. The Olympic Stadium was originally built for the Great Exhibition of 1929, with the idea that Barcelona would then host the 1936 Olympics (ultimately staged in Hitler's Berlin). After failing twice to win the nomination, Barcelona celebrated the attainment of its long-cherished goal by renovating the semi-derelict stadium in time for 1992, providing seating for 70,000 people.

Sports

The Anella Olímpica (Olympic Ring) is the group of sports installations where the main events of the 1992 games were held. And then there s the Park of the Olympic Harbour and Carrer de Rosa Sensat . The cluster of buildings which comprise the neighborhood are the work of architects who have won the FAD prizes for architecture as designed by Helio de Piñón and Albert Vilaplana . The Telef building is by Jaume Bach and Gabriel Mora . Set in the ground, at the Pla dels Campions, is a list of the 257 gold medals won during the 1992 Olympic Games. Some of the legendary figures of international sports have left their handprints in this square.

The Olympic Harbor was built for the 1992 Games by the architects Oriol Bohigas , Josep Martorell , David Mackay and Albert Puigdom and the engineer Joan Ramon de Clasc . It has a wide choice of restaurants, bars and other establishments for the relaxation of athletes at most. It has also made Barcelona 's nightlife even more interesting. Set up in the open air, this place sells anything from paintings to objects made of cut glass.

The National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia was once the project of the Sports University commissioned to Ricard Bofill. The works commenced in April 1988 and were financed in their entirety by the Government of Catalonia . After the Olympic Games, this Sports University became the seat of the National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia (INEFC). There are two twin courtyards of 50 x 50 m, one of which staged the modern and Greco-Roman wrestling competitions during the Games, while the other contained five warm-up mats.

Sports

The L' Estadi Olímpic is designed by the architect Pere Dom i Roure, son of the modernist Lluís Dom i Montaner. The Olympic Stadium of Montju is capable of 55,000 spectators, which can even be increased to 77,000 with the integration of temporary terracing. It can host sports competitions, musical performances or any type of popular event. The ornamental fa is by the sculptor Vicen Navarro , and the statues over the central entrance by Pau Gargallo . Richard Weile was the technical supervisor of the plans and the consultant on matters of sports engineering.

The Olympic Ring is an extensive area of the Montju hill, situated between the Stadium Straight and the walls of the cemetery. The Stadium was rebuilt and the Picornell swimming pools, built in 1969, were modernized as well. Two brand-new buildings were constructed: the Sant Jordi Sports Hall , by Arata Isozaki, and the National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia. Also integrated into this area is a new baseball ground, a circular pond, an extensive park area, the acclimatization garden from the 1929 Universal Exhibition, and a monolith commemorating the Olympic Games by the engineer Santiago Calatrava . The general urbanization project of the Olympic Ring is the work of the team formed by Federico Correa , Alfonso Milá , Carles Buixadé and Joan Margarit.

El Palau Sant Jordi is a covered sports pavilion, designed for the finals of handball and volleyball of the 1992 Olympic Games as well as the competition of athletic and rhythmic gymnastics. The Palau Sant Jordi is the most important feature of the Olympic Ring. The author of the project is the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki . A giant high-fidelity video screen reproduces the images of the performances of the athletes or artists. It can stage an assortment of sports events and other exhibitions. A stage for concerts and ballet performances, an athletics track, with 200 m inner perimeter, plus skating rink can be installed here. The terraces boast a capacity for 17,000 people, and the ventilation system is designed to be supported by an air-conditioning installation, if needed.

Sports

Its construction began in August 1985 and it was inaugurated during the festivity of La Merc in September 1990. The roof is computer- designed by the Japanese engineer Mamoru Kawaguchi. It is an exceptional work of engineering for it is formed by a sizeable concave metallic grid that supports the glazed ceramic tiles and the zinc sheets that guarantee impermeability.
