The Barcelona airport , also called el Prat, opened in 1918. The airport completely changed during the Olympics of 1992. A second terminal was build and the first one was renovated. In 2008 they finished the third terminal which increased passenger handling up to 55 million every year. The Barcelona airport is the second biggest in Spain, after the Airport Madrid Barajas.

The so called Barcelona-Madrid air-bridge is the busiest airway in the world, with the highest number of flights in 2007 (971 per week!). In 2008 this number has been reduced due to the opening of the high-speed railway between the cities.
Location
The airport is located 12 km/8miles southwest of Barcelona. There is a constant shuttle bus to the Placa Catalunya . There is a bus in front of every terminal, every 15 minutes. It is also possible to take the train to the centre of Barcelona . This wil cost you and takes about 25 minutes. The train leaves every 30 minutes.
Another option is taking a Barcelona taxi in front of terminal A, the taxies are metered.
There are over 9000 parking spaces at the airport. All of them are close to the terminals. You have to pay before you leave the park. It is also possible to rent a car at the airport, all the major brands are represented at Barcelona Airport
