The smaller shops open from Monday till Saturday from 9:00h to 13:30h and from 17:00 and 20:00. In between the Spanish people have their Siesta which they spent sleeping, shopping or in a bar. More and more shops are starting to adopt the rest of Europe s custom and stay open in the afternoon.
On Sundays pretty much everything will be closed outside the main tourist area along la Rambla. During the summer months, you shouldn t be surprised finding a lot of shops closed in the afternoon. During July and August most shops are closed for at least 2 weeks.

A credit card is always handy when shopping, even while abroad on holiday. Be sure your credit card is one that is typically accepted abroad, such as those with a Maestro tag, or Visa. Keep in mind that to pay by credit card many stores will typically ask for photographic ID, such as your passport.

 |
What credit cards tend to be accepted can vary a lot with small stores, so be sure to keep a little cash or change on hand if you aren t just going to one of the large malls Barcelona has to offer.
If you are planning to go to one of Barcelona s large markets, be aware that credit cards are not accepted, and you must pay in cash, so be sure to take some along with you to the markets (Watch out for pickpockets!)
If you find you need to withdraw money, special cards such as the above will come in handy, as they often allow you to use cash machines for a small fee. In Spain bank branches are quite common, and so you should have little trouble finding a bank or an ATM where you can withdraw some money with which to go to a market.
