Barcelona Zoological Park opened their gates on the day of the merc in 1982. Lluis Marti I Codolar had a private collection of animals which he offered to the mayor of Barcelona; Manuel Porcar. The mayor agreed to the deal and the city purchased the animals, leading to the founding of a city zoo.
The zoo houses over 7,000 animals belonging to 400 species, including a rare albino gorilla. Barcelona Zoo is one of the most successful Zoos in the world in breeding different species in captivity.
