Picasso was born in Malaga in 1881. He moved with his family to Barcelona at the age of 14. The big city offered him great opportunities to exploit his qualities. In 1897 he had his first public exhibition at the Quatre Gats.

The second floor displays works from Barcelona and Paris, from 1900 to 1904, with a lot of his impressionist-influenced works. The evocative Portrait of Senyora Canals (1905), from his Pink Period is also on display. Among the later works, all executed in Cannes in 1957, consists mostly of studies on Diego Velazquez s masterpiece.
It was Picasso s firm wish to leave the imprints of his art in the city. The family of Picasso gave all his work as a gift the museum.
The Picasso museum Barcelona recently has been both expanded and renovated. The new space is used to display some of his earliest works. The new rooms opened in January 2008.
